A wild silk with crisp texture and beautiful sheen in all the splendor and color of its native India.
Dupion or Dupioni is a pure silk fabric made out of raw silk fiber. It is silk at its best natural form. The default inherent random slubs distinguish it from other lesser quality silks. Available in a myriad range of colors, Dupioni is considered the best in silk for curtains, upholstery and dresses.

The making of Dupioni Silk
Caterpillars create silk by secreting two rows of liquid from the top of their heads. When it touches the air, the liquid becomes solid and the caterpillars wrap themselves up in this substance forming a cocoon. Two caterpillars in the same pod wrapping their yarns around each other yields a double strand which gives a thick and thin appearance. This textured fabric is known as Dupioni silk.
More About Dupioni Silk
Dupioni silk has an irregular weave with tiny nubs showing. It is sometimes confused with 'shantung' or 'raw silk' which is usually lighter in weight and has a finer weave than Dupioni. Dupioni is used extensively by many of the top bridal designers and manufacturers.
Embroidered Dupioni is an incredible fabric to use when creating your bridal gown, bedding or drapery but is rather expensive. Using embroidered Dupioni as a contrast fabric is a great compromise.
Please be aware that silk is a natural product and therefore will always have a small amount of natural flaws. For this reason (particularly for dressmaking) it is always advisable to order a little bit more than you actually need.
